Autism is the most common of the five disorders that comprise the category of Pervasive Developmental Disorders. These five disorders are commonly referred to as the Autism Spectrum Disorders or the Autism Spectrum. It is estimated that 1 child in every 150 births is affected by symptoms on the Autism Spectrum, which translates into about 1.5 million Americans having some form of the disorder. Sadly, the numbers are on the rise, the increase estimated to be between 10 and 17 percent per year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Autism Spectrum Disorders are complex developmental disabilities the symptoms of which usually appear during the first two years of a child’s life. They are as a result of neurological damage which effect the functioning of the brain. The results are usually defecits in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Children on the Autism Spectrum typically have difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication, sometimes profoundly so. They also have problems with social interacions and leisure or play activities. Without treatment, these symptoms remain unabaited and even with treatment, they can be lifelong.
Autism knows no racial, ethnic or social boundries, family income levels, lifestyle choices or educational levels. It can affect any child and any family. Research has shown a strong genetic component in Autism. Astism Spectrum Disabilities are found in people around the globe and generally affect boys four times as often as girls.
